Dear Albany Community,
Yesterday, Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) reported a serious and disturbing safety incident resulting in the arrest of a student. This link includes both their report to the community and the Berkeley Police Department’s report. As has been evident in other recent events involving law enforcement, confidentiality is strictly maintained for ongoing investigations. You were not informed earlier because we were not informed.
This situation was brought to light by a student. I applaud the bravery of that unknown student who spoke out for the benefit of their classmates and the entire community. AUSD will be revisiting our “See something, say something” processes over the summer to ensure that all students know of a safe, confidential route to report concerns. You may also want to examine the safety plans for our schools, redacted to maximize the efficacy of our response to emergencies.
Berkeley Unified has had a very difficult time recently. Please join with me in wishing them a peaceful and healing summer.
