Albany Unified School District (AUSD) Chief Business Official (CBO) Jackie Kim was named the Acting Superintendent of Schools by the Board of Education late in the afternoon on Friday, March 15, 2024 at a Special Meeting. In a separate action, the Board reported that Dr. Donald Evans has been selected to serve as Interim Superintendent subject to negotiation and approval of a contract to be approved at a future open session of a regular Board of Education meeting.
CBO Kim came to AUSD in July 2018 and has worked in public education for a decade. She has earned the trust and esteem of everyone with whom she has interacted here in Albany due to her strong work ethic, warm personality, and impeccable integrity. CBO Kim has been visible at Board of Education meetings at the right hand of Superintendent Dr. Frank Wells. As Acting Superintendent, Ms. Kim will temporarily assume leadership of the District until the time that the Interim Superintendent is officially appointed.
Dr. Donald Evans is a well-known educational leader in California with a career spanning over three decades. Dr. Evans earned his Doctorate of Education from the University of California, Berkeley and served as the Superintendent of Berkeley Unified School District for six years before retiring in 2019. During his tenure in Berkeley, he was selected as Superintendent of the Year by the California Association of African American Superintendents and Administrators. He came out of retirement in 2022–23 to serve as Interim Superintendent for Piedmont Unified School District. Dr. Evans was also a personal and professional mentor to Dr. Wells throughout his tenure at Albany Unified.
President of the Board of Education Veronica Davidson states, “We are confident that CBO Kim will keep AUSD running smoothly during this transition and are truly grateful that Dr. Evans is willing to come here to preserve, foster, and sustain the excellent stewardship of Albany schools that was so important to Dr. Wells.”
