Dear Albany Community,
This week, we were made aware of deeply troubling posters along the Ohlone Path that caused harm to some in our community. There have also been incidents reported of students using harmful language toward one another on our campuses. These external or interpersonal acts are unacceptable and directly oppose our values as a school district.
Let me be clear: hate has no home in Albany Unified School District. While protest is a protected form of free expression, hate speech—especially when it targets individuals or groups based on their identity—crosses a line that causes harm and violates the values of dignity, inclusion, and safety that we uphold in Albany Unified School District. We are committed to standing against all forms of hate, bias, and discrimination—including antisemitism, anti-Blackness, anti-Latino/a/e racism, Islamophobia, anti-Asian hate, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, and any other form.
We are committed as a District to creating learning environments where every student feels safe, valued, and respected. That means addressing harmful language and behavior, teaching inclusive histories, and modeling empathy and accountability in our schools and classrooms.
I ask all of us—educators, families, students, and staff—to recommit to this essential work:
- Speak openly with students about recognizing and challenging hate
- Teach the full and diverse histories of our communities
- Create inclusive classrooms that affirm every identity
- Interrupt bias when it occurs, and respond with care and accountability
We are partnering with school site leaders and community organizations to respond to recent incidents and provide needed support. For next year and beyond, we are investing in professional learning, student-led equity initiatives, and curriculum that cultivates understanding and justice. Thank you for your continued partnership in building schools where every student can thrive.
AUSD’s Emerging Strategic Plan
I have been developing a strategic plan to guide AUSD through the next several years. The input received during my listening campaign has been the basis for this, whose first formal rendition will be the 2025 AUSD Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). This survey conveys the key points and provides our community a chance to see how the raw input was converted to priorities, while providing an opportunity to weigh in once more. Please take a moment to participate. There will be additional opportunities next year to provide feedback on how the District is fulfilling your student’s needs.
National Finalist
A few weeks ago, I mentioned here that AHS student Basye Mummert had been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress for her portrayal of Fiona in Shrek, the AHS spring musical. Basye won at SF Broadway's awards this week, and as Outstanding Lead Actress from our region, she will proceed to the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (the "Jimmys") in New York next month. This is a dream come true for Basye, and exciting for our community!

Plan estratégico emergente del AUSD
He estado desarrollando un plan estratégico para guiar al AUSD durante los próximos años.
